According to Anthropic, hackers linked to the Chinese government used Claude itself to carry out cyberattacks against roughly 30 organizations worldwide, tricking the AI model into believing it was performing legitimate defensive testing in order to bypass its safeguards. The company has described it as the first known case of an AI largely executing a cyber espionage campaign on its own.
This happened before Mythos even existed, and it was already clear where this capability was heading. Every new model got better at this kind of work than the one before it, and by early 2026, one model crossed a line that alarmed even the people who built it. That model was Mythos.
Until then, AI models that found software vulnerabilities could only point to a single flaw, leaving humans to do the rest. Mythos didn’t stop there. It found one vulnerability, then another, then a third, chaining them together into a complete path into a system, from start to finish, without any human help. In cybersecurity, this is called a kill chain, the full sequence of an attack from finding a way in to taking over the entire system. Mythos could execute that entire chain on its own. This episode looks at how AI crossed from finding flaws to exploiting them autonomously, and why that shift changed everything.
