*What are Claude Code and Codex?*
Both are AI coding agents – specialized AI models trained to write code for you. They work locally on your computer and can sync with GitHub, but they come from different companies with different strengths.
*Claude Code (from Anthropic):*
Available in the Claude app (Chat, Cowork, Code tabs) or terminal
Models: Opus 4.6 (most powerful), Sonnet 4.6, Haiku 4.5
Built-in preview tab to see your app as you build
Best for: Design and user interface work
Recommendation: Use Opus 4.6 for coding
*Codex (from OpenAI):*
Standalone app (separate from ChatGPT)
Models: GPT 5.4 with reasoning levels (low to extra high)
Modes: Fast mode (2x tokens, faster response), Plan mode
Best for: Complex tasks that need methodical execution
Recommendation: Use GPT 5.4 on extra high reasoning
*Key similarities:*
Both work on local folders on your computer
Both can sync with GitHub
Both require you to set up your own backend (unlike Lovable/Bolt)
You can integrate Supabase for database and auth (just ask the agent how)
Both have plan mode for complex tasks
Both support skills and slash commands
*Codex pricing:*
Free tier: Available with ChatGPT Free
$20/month: ChatGPT Plus (generous limits – I’ve never hit them)
$200/month: ChatGPT Pro (even more usage)
*Claude Code pricing:*
$20/month: Good amount of usage, but may not be enough for substantial projects
$100/month: Comparable to what I get from Codex’s $20 plan
$200/month: Maximum usage tier
*My honest take:*
Right now, Codex at $20/month offers significantly better value than Claude Code at the same price. OpenAI seems to be giving generous limits to encourage people to try it. For beginners, I recommend starting with Codex on the $20 plan with GPT 5.4 – you’ll get more coding for your money.
